Holiday season is right on the way. The temperature has started to drop, maybe some of you are already under the snow! This is the time to warm up by the fire after a long day at work or outdoors with a glass of hot apple cider and a good book. We don’t add sugar in this recipe so make sure to use sweet apples (we used reinette) so you won’t feel the need to add sugar.
Yields about 4 glasses of cider
- 6 larges apples (organic)
- 2 cups of sugar free apple juice (organic)
- The juice of ½ a lemon (organic)
- 1 teaspoon of four-spice
- 2 teaspoons of cinnamon
- 1-2 teaspoons of finely chopped ginger
Wash the apple, cut in quarters removing the seeds. Put apples in blender with apple juice, lemon juice, four-spice, cinnamon and chopped ginger. Mix to obtain a homogenous mixture (a couple of minutes).
Put mixture in a pan and heat at low heat until hot (5-10 minutes). The mixture should not boil! The mixture should be thick, then separate de thick (“applesauce”) from the juice. To do so, place a container on a surface and pour the mixture through the colander into the container (glass, pan…). The juice will then be in the container and the applesauce in the colander. Use the applesauce to bake a cake or enjoy for breakfast.
Why this is good for me:
This is a natural sugar free cider. Cinnamon is a strong antioxidant and ginger has strong anti-inflammatory properties.
