Do you know how to cook rice? Maybe not. What a surprise it was when we found out something as basic as cooking rice requires skill. We had, however, looked up countless ways to get that perfect rice cooker rice without the rice cooker. Alas, everything we found is wrong, wrong, wrong! The problem with rice is that it tends to get gooey and sticky which is quite unpleasant. There is a trick though, to get that perfect rice! We decided to share it with you through this “how to…” post.
- 500 grams of rice (we used organic whole basmati)
- 60 cl of water
- sea salt
We used basmati whole rice you can use white rice if you choose (the cooking time will be shorter). It is important to keep to the measurements (I only put grams because they are more precise). It is not necessary in european countries to wash rice because you will rid it of its nutrients. In other continents, rinse it a couple times. Add rice in the bottom of a large cooking pan (preferably with a thick base). Add 60 cl of water and salt.
Heat the stove to medium heat and place the pan on the flame uncovered. Now this is really important: do not stir the rice when it’s cooking. No, not even once. Place it on the heat and leave it alone. If you do stir, it will release its starch and will give you horrible sticky rice. Once the water is absorbed (20 min- there will be little holes with steam coming through and there should be no bubbles coming out) remove pan from heat.
Cover pan with a dishcloth and place lid on dishcloth. Return pan to stove and heat at low heat for 10 minutes.Remove pan from heat as is and let it rest for 5 minutes.
Then you may serve. Your rice will be perfectly cooked, light and delicious. You should try it, you will be blown away!
